An Introduction to the Business of Video

Creating a film as a personal project is an enriching experience. Creating a film for someone else where you are getting paid, is quite another.

I was asked to film a wedding, which is amazing due to the fact that my resume contains only horror and comedy shorts. I will talk through the points I considered during this project for hire, and things to remember if you want to make a run at turning your hobby into a business.

Designing an Out Building (with Video)

I decided I need an out building, so of course I designed one. It's ten feet by twelve feet. I'm planning 2x6 wood joists, plywood floor, wood studs, wood joists, wood siding or something similar.

Then I made it into  a video. Enjoy.

Video: Smiling Jack Always Laughs Last

Chances are you saw my previous post where I discussed pre-production of Smiling Jack Always Laughs Last.  Here is the video

Three hours of filming, one hour of video review, about an hour on music, and three hours to edit.

I wish I could have gotten a better mob together, but I'm really pleased with how the scene came out considering I only had two actors in that scene. I also really like the soundtrack queues.

The rough cut of edits was 17 minutes long. The finished video is 5:30.

Filming My Next Video While Getting Spotted by the Cops

I stumbled upon this very well done video; White with Red- based on a creepypasta post.

Which led me to this video; 2AM- A short film based on 'The Smiling Man' by Blue Tidal

There is a community, creeppasta, that posts horror stories and various groups create videos from the stories.

I knew I had to make a video with a smiling man after watching 2AM.  I wanted to make mine more of a roller coaster ride, start slow, begin the climb, hit the peak, then down you go to what you think is safety and then have the bottom drop out.

New Video: The Bumbling Brothers

If you've been following along, a few weeks ago I made a post about a Dexter inspired photo contest. After creating such a great set, I had to capture some video. Here is the splash screen.

So with minimal direction and no script we ad-libbed a few different scenarios. With a situation like this, consistency and plot suffer. I tried to edit the footage into some semblance of a story. I had hoped to shoot a couple more scenes at a different location, but it just didn't work out.

 

No worries, being a humorous take, the inconsistencies aren't quite as glaring.  I went with comedy as my latest string of videos had been a little dark. I don't want to be constrained to a type.

Design Contests

A few years ago,  I entered a local design contest and won.

That propelled me to enter additional design contests and even a few video contests.
Unfortunately, I didn't win additional contests, and my interests have since shifted.

Design contests are a great way to push your creative side, learn, and develop your skills.  The fact that all contests have a deadline, means you can't put them off.

I have submitted a video for a Super Bowl commercial, a Lego animation, and designed a restaurant, an office building, a kitchen, and furniture.

I've also entered and even won a various 'photoshop' contests.

If you need something to do or you're stuck in a rut, try a contest. You may even win a prize.

Short film: Invasion-Intrusion

I had always wanted a single script tackled by two different directors. Everyone tells a story differently. How would that unfold in film? After viewing End of Watch, I had the idea for a short film.

I and a friend took my concept and filmed our own interpretations. It's a simple home invasion. The story is a bit dark. My version is below.

It's low-budget; everything I do is low budget. I wish the gun effects could have been better, but it's my first attempt and I'm pleased.

I hope to finish the alternate interpretation soon, but the delay is with my friend as he finalizes his edit.
